Knowing the right sizes and ratios of all your social media images will help you avoid pixilation, stretching or dodgy crops in the wrong places.
When it comes to image sizing, it’s important to make sure you don’t upload anything with too few pixels as it will look unprofessional and blurred. Similarly, uploading a good quality image with completely the wrong proportions will lead to cropping or stretching, resulting in unbalanced or fuzzy visual content.
It’s a great idea to get to know the ideal sizes and ratios for all the platforms you use, so you can optimise your content to suit them. So to save you from having to sift through every network’s helpdesk to find their recommendations, we’ve collated everything you’ll need in this one simple guide.
Remember! Ratios are displayed as ‘width : length’

Aspect ratio: 16:9 (landscape)
Minimum image size: 600 x 315 pixels

Story image
Recommended image size: 1080 x 1920 pixels
Aspect ratio: 9:16 (portrait)
Minimum image size: 500 pixels in width
Top tip: For Stories with text, consider leaving 14% of the top and bottom text-free (that’s 250 pixels). That way any call-to-action won’t be covered by your brand’s profile photo or buttons.
Video
Aspect ratio: Facebook supports a range of aspect ratios from 16:9 to 9:16, but vertical video formats (4:5, 2:3 & 9:16) are most engaging, since most people hold their phone upright.
Top tip: When you create a video asset for Facebook, design for mobile first. The diagram below gives an idea of how each ratio will display on a mobile device.
Profile image
Recommended image size: 320 x 320 pixels
Aspect ratio: 1:1 (account for circle cropping)
Feed image
Recommended image size: 1080 x 1080 pixels (for portrait or landscape images – width 1080, height between 566 & 1350 pixels)
Aspect ratio: 1:1 (or anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5)
Top tip: If your uploaded Instagram image is a different ratio, the platform will automatically crop your photo to fit a supported ratio. Any images that are not 1:1 will be centre-cropped to square in your gallery, so bear this in mind when uploading landscape or portrait images.
Story image
Recommended image size: 1080 x 1920 pixels
Aspect ratio: 9:16
Minimum image size: 600 x 1067 pixels
Top tip: If you don’t use this ratio, the Story might show with strange cropping, zooming, or leave large sections of the screen blank. Instagram Reels use this same sizing.
Video
Aspect ratio: Instagram supports a range of aspect ratios from 16:9 to 9:16, but vertical video formats (4:5, 2:3 & 9:16) are most engaging, since most people hold their phone upright.
Top tip: When you create a video asset for Instagram, design for mobile first. The diagram below gives an idea of how each ratio will display on a mobile device.
Special note about Infographics:
There is no set aspect ratio for infographics, however we strongly recommend you use a maximum of 1:2. Any taller than that and your image becomes annoying to scroll through, especially on mobile.
